The aim of the conference is to offer new perspectives on the role of pre-Christian mythologies in the formation of national communities in the 19th-Century. During this time, scholars, philosophers, politicians and artists played a crucial part in the formation of national identities, underpinning the emerging national communities. Pre-Christian mythologies, most notably Old Norse or Germanic mythology, were often seen as a cultural source in which to root the collective identity of the community.
Among such intellectuals was the Danish polymath N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872), who was a driving force in the formation of Danish national identity. ...
